I like the quote below.
“People are the real wealth of a nation.” With these words the 1990 Human Development Report began a forceful case for a new approach to thinking about development. That the objective of development should be to create an enabling environment for people to enjoy long, healthy and creative lives may appear self-evident today. But that has not always been the case. A central objective of the Report for the past 20 years has been to emphasize that development is primarily and fundamentally about people

I posted as a page an article by Ms. Ann Pettifor from issue Number 1 of 2009 of Global Future by World Vision. I think she really hits the nail on the head and says much better than I ever could how to both view and address the international economic crisis. To read the article go here.

This quote was found in Money, Power, and Relationships: The Spiritual Renewal of Public Policy and Private Life, by Dr. Michael Schluter of the Jubilee Centre. In it he talks about what is real wealth.
‘Yet if the gross national product measures all of this, there is much that it
does not include. It measures neither the health of our children, the quality
of their education, nor the joy of their play. It measures neither the beauty
of our poetry, nor the strength of our marriages. It pays no heed to the
intelligence of our public debate, or the integrity of our public official. It
measures neither our wisdom nor our learning, neither our wit, nor our
courage, neither our compassion nor our devotion to country. It measures
everything in short, except that which makes life worth living, and it can
tell us everything about our country except those things that make us proud
to be a part of it.’
